It is characterized by a relatively high iron oxide content, ranging between 14% to 18%.

The raw ore is deeply buried beneath the Nen Ni ore layer of Zhaozhuang Mountain in Dingshan Town, Yixing, and has an exterior that is coffee-black. When refined, it ranges from 140 to 180 mesh (generally, red clay is 60 mesh), and this refined clay is termed “Zhuni.” When hot water is poured over Zhuni, it reveals its tender, vibrant red color with hints of shifting purple highlights.

Zhuni clay is renowned for its low sand content, delicate nature, and high difficulty in the production process. From its raw state to the finished product, it experiences significant shrinkage, ranging from 30% to 40%, with poor structural support. As a result, the overall yield of finished products is typically only about 70%. Consequently, it is often used for crafting smaller pieces and as a decorative surface layer for other purple clay works. It’s worth noting that many so-called “Zhuni” teapots on the market are actually produced by firing red clay mixed with other materials and lack the distinct grainy texture found in genuine Zhuni clay.
