Which Tea is the Best Cold Brew Tea?

cold brew green tea

2022 has the hottest summer among these years, not only here in China, but also in many other countries in Asia and EU, so for tea lovers like me, cold brew teas seem to be a good option to cool off on these hot summer days.

What is Cold Brew tea and what are the benefits of Cold Brew Tea?

Cold brew tea, literally means tea brewed with cold water or ice. Cold brewing is a slow process where tea steeps in water for hours in the refrigerator. has its own characteristics compared to the regular hot water brewed tea that we are familiar with.
Benefits of Cold Brew Green Tea
*Cold brew tea releases less caffeine into the tea so there will be less stimulation to your stomach and won’t cause insomnia.
*Less bitter and astringent— cold brew tea also releases fewer catechins and tannins into the brew, which makes the tea less bitter and astringent.
*Easy to prepare — Cold brewing has an easier preparation method than hot brewing. What you need is just a bottle and refrigerator and of course the tea, quite friendly to beginners.
*More nutritious – Cold brew tea retains a greater degree of “catechins” and “tea polyphenols” in the tea leaves, which are very effective in slimming and cancer prevention.

So here comes the question, which tea is the best cold brew tea? We all know that green teas are most suitable for a bottle of refreshing cold brew tea. As cold brew tea is made with cold water, the soluble substances like polyphenols and caffeine inside the tea leaves will be dissolved very slowly under low temperatures. While green tea is non-oxidized tea, the tea leaves contain high levels of tea polyphenols and caffeine, and these two substances are the source of the bitterness and astringency of the tea leaves. Drinking green tea by cold brewing, compared to hot water brewing, tea polyphenols, caffeine, and other substances will be less released, so the tea soup tastes less bitter and more refreshing when cold brewed.

There are so many different green teas and among them, but which one could be the best cold brew tea? I have chosen the most famous six types of Chinese loose leaf green tea. All of them are made from the core origin of their kind and are second to none among their kind.

So I bought the glass bottles for cold brew and did a small test: which green tea will be the best cold brew tea?

Summary

Note: The ratings and comments are based on my personal feeling about these specific teas I have in my storage. Different people may have different preferences.

TypeRatingComments
1. Dragon Well Qunti4.4The aroma is relative low, but the consistency of cold refreshing sweetness wins you at first sip
2. Dragon Well No.434.6High aroma, long-lasting fruity taste like orchid, from all aspects this Dragon well 43 is impeccable
3. Anji Bai Cha4.0Aroma and sweetness are relatively low but quite refreshing
4. Taiping Hou Kui4.6Light yet long-lasting floral fragrance and fruity taste make this Taiping Hou Kui my personal best. Considering the Hou Kui leaves are about 8cm long so the leaves are plucked at a late stage of the season, the taste is not expected to be so mild as this.
5. Huangshan Mao Feng4.0Light and with a fruity taste like melons, a bit of astringency
6. Dongting Bi Luo Chun3.84 hours may be too long for Bi Luo Chun as it has the most delicate tea leaves among all these teas, so there will be more polyphenols released, resulting in a more bitter and astringent taste. So if you want to cold brew Bi Luo Chun, 2-3 Hours shall be enough.
